Awesome Westside Advocates is a member group of Self-Advocates of Indiana who are under the auspices of Sycamore Services. AWA has six officers who meet to plan activities of the group; meetings are open to other members if interested. Each month, there is at least one major activity planned around other community events.
A typical year looks like this:
January: make Valentine’s Day cards for state legislators and top officials
February: attend Statewide SAI meeting and deliver the Valentine’s to the Indiana Statehouse
March: set up library booths for Disability Awareness Month, using materials from the Governors Council for People with Disabilities
April: Basketball fundraiser and silent auction at Ben Davis Christian Church gymnasium
May: Hendricks County Arc meeting and general AWA meeting
June: variable
July: attend Statewide SAI picnic
August: AWA Anniversary party and attend the Biz Time to Shine theatre performance
September: Hendricks County Arc meeting and Quaker Day Parade entry
October: Arc and SAI Conference and a fall party
November: community service project
December- Holiday party and another community service project
