Day programs offer adults with developmental disabilities meaningful activities that build or improve personal skills through structured educational and recreational services. Activities are based on individual goals identified through our person-centered planning process. Sycamore Services offers day activities in Marion, Morgan and Hendricks counties.
Sycamore has two day programs in the Indianapolis area. The site located at 7301 N. Georgetown Road, serves people who are trying to overcome all types of challenges. Staff in our day program plan educational and recreational activities that provide productive, meaningful experiences for those enrolled. Sycamore serves persons with intellectual/developmental delays, Autism, traumatic brain injury, learning disabilities, physical conditions that require wheelchairs or other mobility aids and any other condition that limits full participation in daily life activities.
Sycamore added a site at 10 W Hanna on the South side of Indy to provide access to productive day programs for persons living in that area. This second program, like the others, develops plans that include individual choices, talents and abilities. Indy South produces a lot of art work, some of which is sold at our annual Tiki Time fundraising auction.
In Danville, Sycamore sponsors a day program at 1001 Sycamore Lane. Providing Support, Training and Education for Personal Success, this program works in conjunction with our Work Center, located at the same site, to identify persons who might benefit from vocational training and present opportunities to earn. Some participants may be referred for job development and community employment. Others benefit from math and reading exercises that improve their abilities to be more independent in the home and community.
Participating in Activities for Lifelong Success, for Morgan County residents, is the longest running of Sycamore’s day programs. Many of the individuals enrolled in PALS also hold jobs in the community with the support of Sycamore Employment Consultants. This group plays an active part to improve the environment in their community by volunteering at nursing homes, purchasing and preparing holiday gifts for those in need, and assisting with purchase and collection of pet food for the local humane society.
Sycamore uses satisfaction surveys to determine if our consumers are pleased with our services. In 2014, 98% of consumers and families reported they were satisfied with the services provided. Sycamore works continuously to obtain feedback from parents, families and consumers about the types of services they would like to see added to our current curriculum. In response to requests for cooking lessons, Sycamore initiated a Cooking Class. Each class is made up of 4-6 individuals who learn to read recipes and combine ingredients that result in some dining favorites. The Cooking Class now holds 5 sessions at our Danville location to meet the growing interest. Each session lasts 3-4 hours. The classes are frequently asked to prepare items for special meetings just to show what they can do.
