MUNCIE, IN - James, a custodian at McDonald's in Muncie, Indiana, has had an inspiring journey to find a job that fits his needs and helps him grow. Before landing his current role, James faced difficulties keeping jobs due to a lack of support in previous positions. However, with the help of his job coach, Jason Engle, James embarked on a process called "Discovery," where he explored different work environments and reflected on what worked for him and what didn't. This process helped James identify a job at McDonald's as the perfect fit.

One of the major benefits James found in his role at McDonald's is the structure. He enjoys knowing what to expect each day, and having a regular schedule makes him feel comfortable. Additionally, James's job allows him to work at his own pace, which helps him maintain a sense of pride and accomplishment. Another significant change in his life has been the improvement in managing his Tourette's symptoms. The focus and routine of his job keep his mind busy, helping reduce the frequency of his tics.

James also values the support he receives from his coworkers and job coach. The supportive work environment and the opportunity to interact with customers help him feel like an important part of the team. His job coach continues to provide guidance and check-ins to ensure he has the support he needs to succeed.

James's story isn't just about finding a job; it's about the personal growth and confidence he has gained through his work. With the right support from the Vocational Rehabilitation Program and his job coach, he now feels more independent and proud of the progress he has made. His journey proves that with the right guidance, anyone can find a job that supports their needs and helps them grow.

James’s story also gained recognition at the recent INAPSE Conference, held at the Horizon Convention Center in Muncie on April 17th. He was selected to participate in the Success Panel, where he shared his journey with others in the vocational support community. During his time speaking, he became emotional, and his story had a profound impact on those in attendance.

James's path has not been easy, having been involved in Sycamore’s program since the late 90s and spending some time at Central State Hospital. His honesty and courage left many in the audience moved to tears.
