Recreational Therapy

Supported Employment Services for Individuals with Disabilities in Indiana

Recreation therapy, or therapeutic recreation, strives to improve the functioning and independence of individuals who are ill or disabled. Recreation therapists provide services in clinical facilities and in the community.

Sycamore Services Recreation Therapists incorporate a variety of interventions to treat individuals with physical, cognitive, and emotional conditions. Recreation therapists educate the individuals they serve by using activity to build confidence and reduce stress and anxiety. Sycamore therapists are certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation.

A recreation therapist’s responsibilities vary according to the setting and the patients served. Most recreation therapists are involved in the assessment of physical, mental, emotional, and social functioning. They will utilize information from standardized evaluations, observations, medical records, medical staff, family, and the patients themselves. The therapist will then develop and implement a plan for therapeutic interventions to meet the individual’s needs and interests.

Payment for most services is available through Medicaid Waivers. Persons approved for Community Integration and Habilitation (CIH), Family Support Waiver (FSW), or Traumatic Brain Injury Waivers may request that services be added to the waiver budget. Private pay options are also available. Please contact Sycamore Services for more information regarding funding sources, fees and rates of services.

Hours and location of services, and frequency of services, vary based on the needs of individuals served. For inquiries about receiving Recreational Therapy services, please contact our corporate office at 317-745-4715.

Referrals for services can be made by individuals served, family members, case managers,  or funding sources by calling (317) 745-4715 or  (866) 573-0817.
