How to Become a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) in Indiana

If you've been thinking about a career working with children with autism, becoming a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is one of the fastest ways to get started.
At Sycamore Services, we welcome new RBTs who have completed their 40-hour training and are excited to begin making a difference in the lives of children and families.
The good news is that the certification process is straightforward, can often be completed in just a few weeks, and there are free training resources available to help you along the way.
What Does an RBT Do?
Registered Behavior Technicians work one-on-one with children receiving Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy. Under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), RBTs help children build communication, social, play, self-care, and daily living skills. Every session is an opportunity to help a child become more independent and help families celebrate meaningful milestones.

How to Become an RBT
Becoming certified involves just a few simple steps.
Step 1: Complete a 40-Hour Training
The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) requires every RBT candidate to complete a 40-hour training program. The training can be completed online at your own pace, and there are several options available—including free programs.

Step 2: Apply to Sycamore Services
Once you've completed your 40-hour training, apply to join the Sycamore Services ABA team. After you're hired, we'll guide you through the remaining steps of the certification process while you begin preparing for your new career.
Step 3: Complete a Competency Assessment
After joining Sycamore Services, you'll complete your competency assessment with a qualified BCBA at Sycamore Services. This hands-on evaluation demonstrates that you can apply the skills you've learned while working with children.
Step 4: Apply for Certification
After successfully completing your competency assessment, you'll submit your application through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). You'll create a BACB account, meet the eligibility requirements, and complete the required background check.

Step 5: Pass the RBT Exam
Once your application has been approved through the BACB, you'll receive authorization to schedule your certification exam through Pearson VUE. The exam is multiple choice and is offered at testing centers throughout Indiana.
