With the roar of engines and the flash of speed all around us this month, the Indianapolis 500 captures the spirit of Indiana—bold, determined, and built on pushing limits. Just a short drive from the Speedway, Sycamore Services carries that same spirit into the work we do every day, helping individuals with disabilities navigate challenges and reach their full potential. And there’s perhaps no better symbol of that spirit than Austin Riley, the first professional race car driver with autism.

Austin Riley: Racing With Autism

Austin Riley, from Ontario, Canada, was diagnosed with autism at the age of 12. Growing up, he struggled with social interaction and communication, challenges many individuals with autism face. But one thing always stood out—his passion for cars. That passion turned into purpose as he found confidence and clarity behind the wheel. With support from his family and community, Austin began racing go-karts and eventually moved into high-performance racing circuits.

Today, Austin is a multi-time champion in the Radical Cup North America series and has competed across Canada, the U.S., and Europe. His story has inspired countless fans, families, and individuals with disabilities. Through his platform, Racing With Autism, Austin visits schools and events to share his journey and show that having autism doesn't mean you can't chase big dreams.

His message is simple yet powerful: “Just because you have autism, it doesn't mean you can't do great things.”

Supporting Growth, Independence, and Community at Sycamore

At Sycamore Services, that message resonates deeply. Every day, we support individuals with autism and other disabilities as they work toward their goals—whether that means finding meaningful employment, developing daily living skills, building friendships, or becoming more independent.

We provide person-centered programming across 37 counties in Indiana, including residential services, job training, day programs, and recreational opportunities. Our staff works closely with each individual to build on their strengths, support their challenges, and help them live a life filled with choice, connection, and confidence.

Much like Austin’s journey, the progress we see in those we serve often starts with a spark—a personal interest, a talent, or a desire to grow. With encouragement and the right supports, that spark turns into something incredible.

Keep the Momentum Going

As Indiana celebrates racing this month, we’re proud to celebrate the success stories happening off the track, too. The determination Austin Riley shows in every lap is the same determination we see in the individuals who walk through our doors every day.

At Sycamore Services, we know the race isn’t about being the fastest—it’s about staying the course, supporting one another, and celebrating every milestone along the way.
