The Important Role Mothers and Caregivers Play

At Sycamore Services, we know that behind so many success stories is someone who never gave up.

This Mother’s Day, we want to recognize the mothers, caregivers, guardians, and family members who provide encouragement, advocacy, patience, and unconditional support to the people we serve every day.

For many families, caring for a loved one with intellectual and developmental disabilities means wearing many hats. Caregivers are often advocates, teachers, transportation providers, cheerleaders, organizers, and sources of comfort all at once. Their role is both deeply meaningful and incredibly demanding.

According to the CDC, approximately one in five adults in the United States serves as a caregiver for a friend or family member with a health condition or disability. Additionally, research shows caregivers often experience increased emotional, physical, and financial stress while balancing the needs of their loved ones alongside work, family, and daily responsibilities.

At Sycamore, we have the privilege of walking alongside these families through many stages of life. Whether it is helping a child access autism services, supporting an adult in residential living, helping someone gain employment skills, or encouraging greater independence, family involvement is often at the heart of the journey.

We also understand that caregivers need support, too.

Services like respite care, day programs, community activities, employment services, and residential supports not only help individuals build confidence and independence, but can also provide caregivers with peace of mind, opportunities to recharge, and reassurance that their loved one is supported by people who genuinely care.

Our goal is not to replace the role of the caregiver. It is to come alongside families as a trusted partner and support system. We strive to build relationships grounded in trust, communication, and shared goals while helping every individual live a meaningful and fulfilling life.

This weekend, as we celebrate Mother’s Day, we simply want to say thank you.

Thank you to the mothers and caregivers who continue to show up with strength, compassion, and love every single day. Your impact reaches farther than you know, and we are honored to be part of your journey.
