An Update on the Fight to Protect Medicaid

Why We Must Act Now

At Sycamore Services, we work every day to help individuals with disabilities live more independent, fulfilling lives. But right now, that mission—and the well-being of millions of people—is at risk.

What Happened? The Senate just passed a federal budget bill that proposes devastating cuts to critical programs that support our communities. The bill includes:

  • Nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts — slashing approximately 20% of the federal Medicaid budget. This would strip coverage from an estimated 17 million people, many of whom rely on Medicaid for essential supports like home-based care, therapies, and access to health providers.

  • Nearly $200 billion in cuts to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) — reducing food assistance for families already struggling to make ends meet. Millions of children will go hungry if this passes.

  • The creation of a new private school voucher program — which redirects public education funding to private schools, threatening access to special education services for children with disabilities.

These proposals would dismantle the very foundation of care and services that individuals with disabilities depend on. These aren’t just numbers—they are real people, real families, and real lives.

What’s Next? The fight is not over. The House and Senate must still reconcile their versions of the bill before it goes to the President for signature. That means there’s still time to act—but not much.

Here’s How You Can HelpWe urge our supporters to contact their elected officials right now. Tell them:

  • These cuts will hurt our most vulnerable neighbors.

  • Medicaid is not a luxury—it's a lifeline.

  • Public education should support all children, not just those with the means to access private schools.
