Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month: Julie’s Story

In December 2025, Julie took an exciting step toward greater independence when she began her job at Pizza Hut in Danville. But her journey to employment didn’t start there. With the support of her employment coach, Julie spent time building the skills she needed to succeed not just in getting a job, but in keeping one and growing in it.

Together, Julie and her coach focused on the real-life skills that matter. They practiced being on time, preparing for shifts, answering phone calls, communicating clearly, and advocating for herself as someone living independently. Through discovery and work-based assessments, they identified barriers and worked through them one by one, shaping a path that fit Julie’s strengths, goals, and lifestyle.

Finding the right job match was key. Julie needed a workplace close to home, a positive environment, and natural supports where she could feel safe and valued. When Julie and her coach visited a nearby Pizza Hut, everything began to fall into place. Having grown up knowing the manager, Julie was welcomed with open arms. What started as a visit quickly turned into an opportunity.

After preparing for the interview and learning more about the available roles, Julie was offered a position. She accepted a role preparing pizza dough, chicken wings, desserts, and more, working three days a week. Her work is essential to the restaurant’s success. The hundreds of items she prepares help keep a busy, high-volume kitchen running smoothly.

But Julie’s impact goes beyond the tasks she completes. She is a dedicated team member who shows up motivated and ready to contribute. Her efforts have been recognized by her management team, even earning a Quality People Champ card.

Today, Julie is thriving. She has built strong communication and time management skills, works confidently within a supportive team, and takes pride in what she does. Most importantly, she feels empowered. Julie shares that she loves going to work, values her independence, and feels respected and heard. She is confident in expressing her needs and making decisions for herself.

Julie’s story is a powerful reminder of what is possible when the right supports, opportunities, and belief in someone’s potential come together. During Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we celebrate Julie and the many individuals like her who are building meaningful lives through employment, independence, and community.
