- Join The Arc of Hendricks County: A Call to Support Our Community Amid Medicaid Challenges
In the heart of Hendricks County, Sycamore Services stands as a beacon of hope and support for individuals with disabilities. As the local chapter of The Arc of Indiana, Sycamore Services is dedicated to empowering individuals to achieve independence and inclusion within our community. Their comprehensive disability support services make a tangible difference in the lives of many, offering programs that range from independent living assistance to vocational training. ( sycamoreservices.com ) The Arc of Indiana, through its network of 44 chapters covering 68 counties, serves as a formidable advocate for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. This organization works tirelessly to ensure that these individuals have access to the resources and opportunities they need to lead fulfilling lives. ( arcind.org ) The Urgency of Membership in the Current Legislative Climate Recent developments at both federal and state levels have introduced significant uncertainties regarding Medicaid funding—a vital source of support for many individuals served by Sycamore Services. The House of Representatives has passed a budget resolution aiming to cut $880 billion over the next decade from programs under the purview of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, with Medicaid being a primary target. Such cuts could profoundly impact the availability and quality of services for our community members. In Indiana, legislative measures such as Senate Bill 2 propose overhauls to the state's Medicaid expansion program, including the reintroduction of work requirements and capping enrollment. These changes threaten to reduce coverage for nearly 200,000 individuals, further exacerbating the challenges faced by those relying on Medicaid for essential services. How Your Membership Amplifies Our Collective Voice By joining The Arc of Hendricks County, you become part of a collective effort to advocate for policies that protect and enhance services for individuals with disabilities. Membership is open to program participants, family members, Sycamore employees, rehabilitation professionals, and community advocates. Members convene three times a year to discuss pertinent issues, elect leadership, and strategize on advocacy efforts. These meetings provide a platform to stay informed about legislative developments and to coordinate responses that influence decision-makers at all levels of government. Take Action Today In times of legislative uncertainty, the strength of our collective voice becomes even more critical. Your membership in The Arc of Hendricks County empowers us to stand united in advocating for the rights and services that individuals with disabilities rightfully deserve. 👉 To join, visit www.sycamoreservices.com and become a member today. - Sycamore Services Community Survey Reveals Key Insights to Guide Strategic Planning
April 2025 – Sycamore Services recently concluded a comprehensive community survey, gathering valuable feedback from over 300 stakeholders, including staff, board members, service recipients, and community partners. The results offer a clear and candid picture of the organization’s strengths and areas for growth as it looks ahead to future planning. A Strong Foundation in Mission Alignment One of the most encouraging findings was the high level of alignment with Sycamore Services’ mission. An impressive 76.8% of staff indicated they believe the organization is living up to its core values. External stakeholders echoed this sentiment, particularly praising the employment services and job coaching programs. This shared sense of purpose provides a solid foundation as the organization works to expand and improve. Opportunities for Enhanced Communication However, the survey also highlighted areas in need of improvement—chief among them, communication. Thirty-four percent of staff identified communication as a significant challenge, pointing to the need for better interdepartmental coordination, stronger connections across service locations, and clearer information about available resources. Improving communication will be a central focus in the coming months. Addressing Transportation and Accessibility Barriers Transportation emerged as the top concern among external respondents, while accessibility challenges were frequently cited by staff and leadership. Issues ranged from vehicle accessibility to scheduling and geographic limitations, all of which directly affect Sycamore Services’ ability to promote full community integration for the individuals it serves. Workforce Development Remains a Critical Priority The survey results underscored the vital importance of workforce development. Sixty-three percent of leadership noted staffing shortages, with many respondents emphasizing the need for improved employee retention, training, and career development opportunities. Strengthening and supporting staff will be a key element of the organization's long-term strategy. Looking Ahead These survey insights will play a critical role in shaping Sycamore Services’ upcoming strategic planning initiatives. By listening to the voices of its community, the organization is better equipped to build on its successes and tackle its challenges with purpose and clarity. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who took the time to share their experiences and perspectives,” commented CEO, Yolanda Kincaid. “Your feedback has given us the direction we need to ensure that Sycamore Services continues to support individuals with developmental disabilities in living their best lives.” Stay tuned for updates as we continue this important work-together.

As Indiana’s 2025 legislative session continues, it’s more important than ever for individuals, families, and organizations supporting people with disabilities to stay informed and engaged. Several bills being discussed have the potential to impact how essential services are delivered — especially those tied to Medicaid-funded supports. 🔍 What’s Happening? One of the most concerning developments is the proposed changes to Medicaid-funded Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy — a vital service for many children with autism. If implemented, these changes could restrict access to therapy beginning April 1, 2025 . - Equal Pay Day: Why Wage Equity for People with Disabilities Matters
Today marks National Equal Pay Day —a day that symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. While gender pay inequality continues to be a national concern, this day is also an important moment to shed light on another persistent and often overlooked pay gap: the wage disparity experienced by people with disabilities. The Reality of Wage Gaps for People with Disabilities People with disabilities face significant wage disparities across all sectors of the workforce. According to a 2023 report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) , the median earnings for workers with disabilities were only 66 cents for every dollar earned by workers without disabilities. This wage gap not only reflects biases and barriers in hiring but also longstanding systemic inequities in education, access, and accommodations. A 2020 report by the National Disability Institute (NDI) found that individuals with disabilities are twice as likely to live in poverty and are employed at significantly lower rates than those without disabilities. Even among those who are employed full-time, pay equity remains elusive. The Subminimum Wage Debate One major contributor to this issue is the continued use of Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act , which allows employers to pay people with disabilities less than the federal minimum wage. Though intended to create opportunities, this practice has come under increasing scrutiny for perpetuating inequality. In 2020, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights issued a report recommending the phase-out of 14(c) certificates, stating that the program “limits the potential of people with disabilities and fails to prepare them for integrated employment.” Indiana's Step Toward Fair Wages We're proud to share that Indiana has already made legislative progress in this area. In 2023, Indiana passed House Bill 1342 , which phases out the use of subminimum wages for people with disabilities. The law prohibits new 14(c) certificates from being issued and sets a timeline for existing ones to expire, moving the state toward competitive, integrated employment opportunities for all Hoosiers. This legislative shift reflects a growing recognition that all people—regardless of ability—deserve equal pay for equal work. Indiana is now one of a growing number of states leading the way in making wage equity a reality. Source: Indiana General Assembly – House Bill 1342 (2023) Why This Matters to Sycamore Services At Sycamore Services, we believe in the value and potential of every individual . - Indiana Proposed Restrictive Changes to Medicaid Coverage for ABA Therapy
By Yolanda Kincaid The Indiana Office of Medicaid Policy and Planning (OMPP) has proposed significant changes to Medicaid-funded Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, a vital service for children with autism. The new restrictions, set to take effect on April 1, 2025 , could severely impact access to therapy for thousands of Hoosiers, including hundreds of Hendricks County families, who rely on these services for their children’s development and long-term success. Key changes include capping ABA therapy at 30 hours per week , despite research supporting higher intensities for many children to achieve optimal outcomes. ABA therapy is a data-driven approach that tailors support to each child's unique needs. Arbitrarily limiting hours undermines the core principles of ABA and could hinder long-term progress. Another proposed restriction would limit a child’s eligibility for intensive ABA therapy to just three years . Advocates argue that transitioning out of therapy should be based on progress, not a predetermined timeframe. Each child’s developmental journey is different, and an abrupt cutoff could disrupt gains made in therapy, particularly for those transitioning back into school or other environments. At Sycamore Services , we provide ABA Therapy in Hendricks County, and we believe in individualized support and are actively working with legislators to advocate for policies that reflect the needs of children and families. We encourage the community to take action by submitting public comments during the open comment period , which ends February 14, 2025 . How to Make Your Voice Heard Personal stories are powerful in demonstrating the impact of ABA therapy. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to submit comments: By Email: Send to spacomment@fssa.in.gov with the subject line COMMENT RE: ABA THERAPY COVERAGE By Mail: Address letters to: FSSA Office of Medicaid Policy and Planning Attn: Madison May-Gruthusen 402 West Washington Street, Room W382 PO Box 7083, Indianapolis, IN 46207-7083 (Include COMMENT RE: ABA THERAPY COVERAGE at the top of the letter.) You can also contact your state legislator to express how these changes would impact your family. Find your legislator’s contact information at iga.in.gov/information/find-legislators . Indiana families rely on ABA therapy to provide children with autism the tools they need to thrive. These proposed restrictions risk limiting access to essential services, and advocacy is crucial to ensuring that children receive the care they need for a brighter future. It’s important to me that they feel prepared to serve others with compassion and effectiveness." Samantha Stone Samantha Stone, one of Christa’s supervisees, shared how impactful Christa’s mentorship has been on her journey to becoming a BCBA: "From day one, after signing my supervision contract, Christa began to provide opportunities for growth and learning in the field of ABA. She immediately worked closely with me, providing feedback, teaching moments, and additional assignments to help me deepen my knowledge. Her dedication has been incredible." Samantha highlighted Christa’s unwavering commitment to helping others succeed: "Christa has never hesitated to explain the reasons behind decisions or help me understand the thought process involved in creating programs for our learners. - Staying Healthy and Active During Winter

For individuals with disabilities, finding safe and accessible ways to stay engaged can take a little extra creativity. Here are some tips and strategies tailored to Sycamore Services' clients to help you thrive this winter. 1. Stay Active Indoors Cold weather doesn’t mean you have to put your physical activity on hold. There are plenty of ways to stay active indoors: Stretching and Yoga : Gentle stretches or chair yoga can improve flexibility and reduce stress. Online platforms like YouTube offer accessible yoga videos for all abilities. Dance It Out : Turn on your favorite music and move to the rhythm! Dancing is a fun way to get your heart rate up and improve your mood. At-Home Exercises : Resistance bands and light weights are great for strength training at home. Try winter-friendly activities like birdwatching or nature photography to make outdoor time engaging. Remember to dress warmly in layers, wear sturdy footwear, and protect your extremities with gloves and hats. 3. Focus on Nutritious Comfort Foods It’s tempting to reach for less healthy options during winter, but a balanced diet is key to maintaining energy and wellness. Incorporate seasonal vegetables like sweet potatoes, squash, and kale into your meals. Warm, hearty soups can be both comforting and packed with nutrients. Try this easy vegetable soup recipe. Stay hydrated—heating systems can make indoor air dry, so drinking water is just as important in winter as in summer. 4. Prioritize Mental Health Winter blues are real, and shorter days can affect our mood. Combat this by: Scheduling regular social interactions, whether in-person or virtual. Practicing mindfulness or relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises. Accessing resources like the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for mental health support. 5. Keep Your Immune System Strong Winter is flu season, so take steps to stay healthy: Get your flu shot and stay up-to-date on other vaccines. Wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs. Include immune-boosting foods like citrus fruits, garlic, and yogurt in your diet. 6. - Empowering Individuals with Autism and Disabilities this Election Season
As election season approaches, it is crucial to recognize and uphold the voting rights of individuals with autism and other disabilities. Voting is a fundamental way to influence decisions that affect both personal and community-wide matters, including key issues like education, healthcare, housing, and employment services. Statistics reveal that individuals with disabilities, including those with autism, face unique challenges when it comes to voting. According to a 2020 report by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, people with disabilities voted at a rate of 49.3% in the 2018 midterm elections, compared to 58.0% of non-disabled voters. This gap highlights the need for ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and support for disabled voters. Individuals with autism may encounter specific barriers such as confusing voting procedures, inaccessible polling places, and a lack of supportive resources, which can discourage participation. Addressing these challenges is essential to ensure that everyone can exercise their right to vote. Organizations like Autism Speaks play a vital role in addressing these barriers. Their Autism Votes initiative provides comprehensive information on voting rights, registration, and advocacy for policies that support individuals with autism. This program aims to make the voting process more accessible and informed. Similarly, The Arc of the United States is dedicated to promoting accessible voting.
