  • History | Sycamore Services

Discover the rich history of Sycamore Services, a leader in providing disability support services since its founding. From our humble beginnings to becoming a trusted community partner, our journey reflects a steadfast commitment to empowering individuals, fostering independence, and creating inclusive opportunities. Learn more about our story and milestones. History Hendricks County, 1958: There were families living in the area who had children with special needs. At that time, children with developmental delays or physical impairments could not be served by the local school system in regular classes because teachers and accommodations were not available. A few of the families became friends and supported each other in their desire to provide their children with opportunities to live as normally as possible within their community. They knew it would be easier to effect change in Hendricks County as a group. They began holding monthly meetings to discuss the type of services needed most by their children and where to obtain it. They formalized the group by naming themselves as officers. September, 1959: They opened their meeting to all residents of Hendricks County. Their persistence made an impression on the local school board and before the end of the year, special classes were added to the local curriculum. 1961: The original group had grown and incorporated themselves as the Hendricks County Association for Retarded Children (HCARC). With their growth in size, came growth in knowledge. They became aware of what was available to children in other counties and wanted the same things for Hendricks County children. HCARC approached local business organizations and asked for funds that would be used to build a small school of their own. 1968: A work services program began finding jobs for the older teens and young adults. The work provided them with skills and an income. 1976: A generous benefactor bequeathed $30,000 to double the size of the existing school. 1982: Opportunity Cottage was serving 26 adults, 8 pre-school children, and 8 infants in an early stimulation program. November, 1962: A fund drive was initiated and $12,627 was raised, along with donated materials and equipment, to build Opportunity Cottage, at 405 Lincoln Street in Danville. The HCARC maintained their connections in the community and members of local clubs and civic groups volunteered to assist with the growing number of children and teenagers at Opportunity Cottage. By this time, many of the initial enrollees were now adults and the curriculum was revised to include year-round activities for adults, as well as infants and children. 1989: Enrollment and the diversity of needs had increased significantly. Besides the work services done by participants, a day service program had been added to assist those with more complex conditions that required closer monitoring. The enrollment in adult programs outnumbered that of children and it was decided that Adult Services would move to a new location, while Early Intervention would remain at the original building. 1991: A new facility opened at 1001 Sycamore Lane, and the organization took on a fresh identity, becoming Sycamore Rehabilitation Services. The new facility included a double-sized kitchen, 3 large rooms for vocational training and contract work, a loading dock and several offices for staff and administrative personnel; the name was chosen to reflect the similarities between the agency and the Sycamore tree which is known to grow where other trees fail, and for its characteristic of shedding bark that reveals new growth, making it a symbol of progress and life. To this day, Sycamore Services continues to grow. Our headquarters remains at Sycamore Lane in Danville, but we now have offices throughout central Indiana, and Evansville, to serve a wider population. By hiring qualified, caring staff, Sycamore Services has developed a reputation of excellence throughout the state.

  • ABA Therapy | Sycamore Services

Explore Sycamore Services' Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, a proven approach to support children with autism and developmental disabilities. Our personalized ABA programs focus on building skills, enhancing communication, and improving behavior in everyday life. Discover how ABA therapy can make a lasting impact for you or your loved one. Foundational Skills Increasing Independence At Sycamore Services ABA Opportunity Center, we’re dedicated to creating a welcoming and compassionate environment for the families and children we serve. Our focus is on working together to promote independence and improve their overall quality of life. Get Started What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)? Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a proven, research-based therapy that has been shown to be the most effective approach for supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ABA focuses on understanding how behavior is influenced by the environment and the functions behind different behaviors. Through this understanding, ABA professionals create individualized treatment plans designed to teach new skills and replace challenging behaviors. How ABA Therapy Works ABA therapy aims to improve adaptive learning, communication, and behavior by breaking down skills into smaller, manageable steps that are taught through repetition and reinforcement. Research indicates that children with autism see significant benefits when they receive 20-40 hours of ABA therapy each week. Each treatment plan is personalized, using a variety of techniques that adapt to the unique needs of each learner. ABA emphasizes socially significant behaviors—skills that make a real difference in a child's everyday life. One key strategy in ABA is reinforcement, where positive behaviors are immediately followed by something valuable to the child, encouraging them to repeat those behaviors in the future. Over time, this approach helps build on and develop new, positive behaviors. Why Choose Sycamore Services ABA Opportunity Center? At Sycamore Services ABA Opportunity Center, we take a compassionate and strength-based approach to therapy. We focus on each child's interests and strengths to teach skills that offer more choices and opportunities for joy in their lives. Our naturalistic, play-based instruction encourages the generalization of skills in a way that is both fun and meaningful for the child. Rather than focusing solely on behavior elimination and compliance, we embrace neurodiversity and prioritize compassion and cooperation. Our goal is not to "take away" autism but to equip children with the tools and skills they need to become more independent, safe, and happy participants in society. Through a holistic, child-centered approach, we strive to improve outcomes and enhance the quality of life for both children and their families. Our Values Kindness Providing compassionate care in an environment where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect. We believe in creating an environment where all individuals are accepted and treated with dignity and respect. We build trust with our team and clients by treating them with empathy and compassion to foster an environment where individuals feel comfortable being themselves, and safe to learn and grow as they are faced with challenges. Collaboration Working together with other professionals and providers to increase success for the individuals we serve. We value connection and collaboration across all professionals and providers working with our clients and families. By listening and evolving together, we can improve problem solving, prompt innovation, and promote increased success for our learners Teamwork Team and family members working together towards a common goal of growth and success. We believe that working together and building upon individual strengths allows for growth through challenge, collaboration, and support. By creating a team of professionals, family members, and caretakers that are working together towards a common goal, we are better able to support the success of the individual and their family. Community Creating social connection and support for families and the communities we serve. We place a strong emphasis on the importance of social connection to support continual growth and a sense of belonging for all members of the community. Through education, dissemination, and support, we will help families build a support system, increase awareness, and build relationships with individuals and businesses throughout the communities we serve Integrity Emphasizing honesty, transparency, and doing what is right in our everyday practice. We hold ourselves to the highest moral, ethical, and professional standards. We believe in honesty and doing what is right. As practitioners, we will always continue to progress and improve to do better and be better in the world of ABA. Success Celebrating every stride toward independence and successful transitions into schools and the community. We believe that all victories, big and small, deserve to be celebrated. We rejoice with our learners and their families because every win is a step towards their independence. Practitioners will consistently analyze data to ensure progress, empower our learners to thrive, and navigate successful transitions into schools and the community ABA FAQ's What are your hours? We provide all therapy materials needed for the child’s program and the clinic is stocked with a wide variety of age-appropriate toys, games, and activities. You are welcome to send in personal items to individualize your child’s therapy space such as pictures, or sensory items if you choose. Each child should bring a packed lunch each day, including a drink, and appropriate snacks as desired. If your child is not potty trained, please bring a supply of diapers or pull-ups and wipes. All children, regardless of age, should have a change of clothes on hand that are appropriate for the season. How do you determine goals and what my child will work on? Each child will be evaluated by a BCBA using an appropriate assessment(s) for their age and skill level. These assessments along with parent/caregiver interview and input will guide programming and goals that will be implemented in your child’s therapy sessions. How do you handle Challenging Behavior? Our therapists are trained to manage challenging behavior and work with their BCBA to determine the function of the behavior. Based on this information and observation, the BCBA will develop an individualized behavior intervention plan that all team members will be trained to implement consistently. All staff members are trained in Safety Care techniques including crisis prevention and crisis management. What does RBT stand for? An RBT is Registered Behavior Technician. And RBT is a certified paraprofessional who works under the supervision of board certified behavior analysts or as part of a clinical team. What does BCBA stand for? A BCBA is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. This is a master’s level certification. They provide clinical oversight and training for our RBTs and implementation of therapy programs. How do I communicate with my child’s RBT or BCBA? We understand that communication about your child’s day and progress is very important. You will be provided with a daily summary of your child’s day and the RBT will communicate with you at pick up about what they worked on and how the day went. You will meet with your child’s BCBA at minimum 1 time per month, and more often if your schedule allows. You can contact your child’s BCBA via email, or phone and text if you have any questions or concerns. Do you offer training for parents? Parent and caregiver training is highly encouraged and offered on a consistent basis! Parents and caregivers play a crucial role in transitioning the child’s treatment plan to the family home and daily life, and because of this, they need to be actively engaged in the process. Our BCBAs (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) will provide parents with the scientific tools and strategies of ABA, direction and training in behavior functions, and methods to develop and reinforce skills and routines outside of the therapy program. Do you work on potty training? Absolutely! This is a very important milestone for any child and often a priority for parents and caregivers. We have many successful methods and strategies to address toileting needs and will work with you and your child to determine the best fit. What if we are having challenges in the home? Your child’s BCBA will discuss challenges you are experiencing and determine if a home visit is appropriate. From there the BCBA will work with you to determine if in-home parent training or in-home ABA therapy and consultation are appropriate to meet your child’s and your family’s needs. What is the autism mandate? The autism mandate requires specific health insurers to provide people under 21 years old insurance for the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders and for the treatment of ASD. Will my insurance cover ABA therapy? Insurance can be complicated and confusing, and we are here to help you through this experience. Our team will check your current policy as well as alternate funding sources if required. We accept insurance coverage from most providers including Anthem, Aetna, Caresource, United Healthcare, Cigna, Medicaid, and many more.
