Why Community-Based Supports Matter Research continues to show the positive impact of home and community-based services (HCBS) for people with disabilities. According to research from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University, individuals who transition from institutional settings into community-based services experience improved quality of life, greater community participation, reduced depression, increased life satisfaction, and stronger feelings of dignity and respect. Studies also show that community-based supports can improve outcomes while reducing overall long-term care costs. Additional research from KFF highlights that home and community-based services help individuals maintain independence, participate in community life, build relationships, and access employment opportunities while receiving the supports they need to succeed. At Sycamore, we see these benefits every day. Community-based supports allow individuals to make choices about their lives, develop new skills, strengthen relationships, and actively participate in the communities they call home.
